UQ Staff Pilates
Pilates is an exercise technique greatly beneficial to people of all ages and fitness levels. The movements (based on the work of Joseph Pilates) are designed to strengthen and elongate your muscles. You will experience improved posture and greater mobility. This method emphasises the balanced development of what Joseph Pilates called the ‘powerhouse’ and ‘second powerhouse’.
The powerhouse encompasses the band of muscles that circle the body just below the belt line; it includes the abdominals, lower back, hips and buttocks. More recently, the powerhouse has been referred to as the core. The second powerhouse is more commonly called the shoulder girdle - the group of muscles around the shoulders, chest, shoulder blades and upper back.
How does the UQ Staff Pilates course run?
The Pilates course will introduce participants to the basic concepts of Pilates. You’ll learn a set of simple exercises that work the core muscles and reshape the body. The same exercises will be repeated throughout the course to develop muscle memory and train the body to trigger from the inside out, protecting the spine. Your instructor will demonstrate different levels of some exercises in order to challenge more advanced students.
On completion of the course, you will notice improved posture and greater mobility. Participants will have stronger abdominals, improved flexibility, greater strength and more defined muscles. Increased core strength will also assist in weight loss, body shape and bone density.
